Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

The practice of structuring content to directly answer specific questions, making it more likely to be surfaced by voice assistants, featured snippets, and AI answer engines.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) focuses on creating content that provides direct, structured answers to questions — optimising for the growing number of “zero-click” search experiences where the answer is delivered without the user visiting a website. This includes Google featured snippets, voice search, Google’s AI Overviews, and tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT.

The Rise of Answer Engines

Traditional search engines rank pages. Answer engines synthesise responses. As AI assistants become the primary interface for information retrieval for many users, AEO ensures your content is the source those engines draw from.

AEO Tactics

  • Question-based headings — structure sections around the exact questions your audience asks (“What is X?”, “How does Y work?”, “When should you Z?”)
  • Concise answer-first writing — lead each section with a 40–60 word direct answer, then expand
  • FAQ sections with schema markupFAQPage structured data helps both Google and LLMs extract Q&A pairs
  • Conversational language — match the natural language patterns of how people speak queries to voice assistants
  • How-to schema — structured step-by-step guides are frequently extracted by answer engines

AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO

These three disciplines overlap but have different primary targets: SEO targets Google’s traditional ranking algorithm, AEO targets zero-click answer extraction, and GEO targets AI-generated search results and LLM citations. A modern content strategy should account for all three.
