Keyword Difficulty (KD) is a metric used by SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, etc.) to estimate the competitive effort required to rank in the top 10 results for a keyword. It is typically expressed as a score from 0 to 100.
What Factors Influence KD
Different tools calculate KD differently, but common inputs include:
- Domain Rating / Domain Authority of currently ranking pages
- Number and quality of backlinks pointing to ranking pages
- Number of referring domains to ranking pages
- Presence of strong brands or authoritative sites in the SERP
KD as a Relative Metric
KD scores vary significantly between tools — a score of 40 in Ahrefs is not equivalent to 40 in Semrush. Always benchmark KD within the same tool and against keywords you already rank for.
Low KD ≠ Easy Win
A low KD score does not guarantee you can rank. You also need to consider:
- Search intent alignment — does your content type match what Google wants?
- Your site’s authority — new sites struggle even for low-KD terms
- Content depth — thin content rarely outranks established competitors
A Practical Approach
Target keywords where KD is within reach of your current domain authority, search volume is sufficient to matter, and you can create clearly better or more differentiated content than current ranking pages.
